Handwriting Without Tears

IS COMING TO BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION

WHEN: Fall 2007

 WHERE: To be determined

WHY: To make legible and fluent handwriting an easy and automatic skill for children with special needs. Unique and compelling curriculum design and teaching strategies facilitate this goal. We use multi-sensory techniques and consistent habits for letter formation to teach handwriting to kids pre-K through cursive. It also helps improve a child's self-confidence, pencil grip, body awareness and posture.

WHO: Brought to you by the Down Syndrome Support Group of Bryan-College Station

The class is designed for children with special needs, ages 3 and up, who have difficulty with fine motor skills. Your child will learn at his or her own pace according to his or her own skill set.

Taught by Phyllis Hodges, a local teacher certified in the Handwriting Without Tears method, with one-one-one Aggie volunteers .

Informational Parent Meeting will be held in August 2007.

Writing Should be fun for kids!

The First Class was held March 19 - April 4, 2007.  It was hosted by the Cornerstone Enterprises Business Class at Mays Business School, TAMU.

What parents are saying:

We’re so pleased that our son Quentin had the opportunity to work on his handwriting skills after hours in such a fun, loving environment with his friends? And when we know that another Aggie is learning from him, it makes it even better. We’ll sign up again and again until he’s ready to write his best-selling novel. Then we can all retire! Thanks, Christy and Phyllis, for making this possible. - Sondra W.

HWT is an excellent way to get children motivated to participate in handwriting and strengthen their fine motor muscles. The program seemed perfectly aligned with the children's short attention spans and wide range of ages. They were able to move their bodies to help connect the skilsl to their learning, as well as, spend time with an individual instructor for direct handwriting practice. The instructors were good about redirecting off task behaviors and encouraging those who were tired and didn't really feel like working. I hope my daughter is able to participate again in future classes. - Jennifer S.
